
NEW: PPS Fine Arts Academy now accepting applications for the 23-24 school year
Applications are currently being accepted for the division’s Fine Arts Academy. The academy, which is housed at Churchland High School, offers an honors level curriculum in Visual Arts to prepare students for AP Studio Arts courses as well as college and career opportunities. All rising ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders who love Visual Arts can apply for this opportunity. This is a divisionwide program, so transportation to Churchland will be provided to all accepted students. New England Conservatory String Quartet to present for all PPS high school bands and orchestras
The New England Conservatory String Quartet will hold special performances for band and orchestra classes at the division's three high schools. This opportunity is the result of the ongoing partnership that the school division has with the Virginia Arts Festival. The organization provides opportunities of this caliber to the school division every year at no charge. The quartet will be at the high schools from Tuesday, March 21 to Thursday, March 23. NEW: Auxiliary Services Job Fair taking place March 30
The PPS Department of Human Resources is hosting the Auxiliary Services Job Fair Thursday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at S.H. Clarke (2801 Turnpike Road). This job fair is specifically to hire positions in the Department of Auxiliary Services, which include bus drivers, bus monitors, crossing guards, custodians and food service workers. PPS Runs It 3K Color Run back again
Portsmouth Public Schools is again hosting the PPS Runs It 3K Color Run at Churchland High School that will raise funds to provide swim lessons for PPS families. The run will take place Saturday, May 20, at 9 a.m., but participants must register by Thursday, March 30. The registration fee is $20 for adults, but there is no registration fee for PPS students and their parents/guardians. All student participants must have an adult designee with them. PPS hosting All-City Festival
PPS will be hosting an All-City Festival that will highlight student achievement in the Fine and Performing Arts, Health & Physical Education/Wellness as well as World Languages. The festival will be at Churchland High School from Thursday, March 30 to Saturday, April 1. For three days, there will be fine and performing art events as well as numerous exhibitions featuring students of grades 4-12. The festival will run from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 757-393-8743.
Virginia Symphony Orchestra SOAR High School Band and Orchestra Program starting next week
Virginia Symphony Orchestra is again taking part in the SOAR program, where musicians will come in during the school day to work with all PPS high school music programs. This successful collaboration with the school division has been in place for a number of years, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra provides this service to teachers and students at no charge to the school division. Schools closed for Spring Break
All schools will have an early release Friday, April 7, and all schools and administrative offices will be closed Monday, April 10 through Friday, April 14 for Spring Break.
