Brighton Elementary School’s Lenette Hillian-Sanders has been named the 2021 Virginia Council for
Learning Disabilities (VCLD) Teacher of the Year.
According to the VCLD, this honor is given to a teacher with more than five years of experience who has
“achieved in areas of teaching, leadership, and/or advocacy for students with learning disabilities at a
level that is exceptional among his/her peers.”
In a letter to Hillian-Sanders from VCLD Past-President and Awards and Honors Chairperson Clara Hauth,
Hauth noted that Hillian-Sanders received “glowing letters of support” for her nomination and that she
was to be commended for her “important work” and “outstanding commitment” to the success of
children with disabilities.
As the VCLD winner, Hillian-Sanders will attend the annual national conference to represent Virginia
among the other state winners.
