Simonsdale Elementary’s Apiphanie Hill named PPS Citywide Teacher of the Year

Apiphanie Hill, a fifth-grade teacher, at Simonsdale Elementary School has been named Portsmouth Public Schools’ Citywide Teacher of the Year.

Hill has been teaching with the division for five years, and in that time has made an impact on her students and colleagues.

“Ms. Hill is a worthy and deserving selection for our Citywide Teacher of the Year,” said Dr. Elie Bracy, III, superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools. “Anyone who visits her classrooms sees firsthand the love, passion and creativity she brings to her students each and every day. She engages her children by making sure to find the fun in education, while also reinforcing our core curriculum with them. I have no doubt she will represent our division well over the course of this next year.”

Hill’s classroom can be described as a learning laboratory. With her class, she will sing rap songs to learn the parts of a cell or write fairy tale stories about the mean, median, and mode just to build a better understanding of statistics. On Science Fridays, or “Sci Fri” as she refers to it, students conduct hands-on and collaborative experiments.

“Learning must always extend beyond a textbook or a worksheet. When students are having fun by being able to be creative and problem solve, it will only take them to new heights,” Hill wrote in her application. “My philosophy of teaching stems around the belief that everyone can learn. Every student is capable of learning as long as the educator is willing to meet the student where he or she-is academically.”

As the citywide teacher of the year, Hill will now go on to compete for the Region 2 Teacher of the Year honor against citywide winners in neighboring divisions.
