For the second year in a row, 14 of the 19 Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) testing schools have earned full accreditation, according to data released today by the Virginia Department of Education. In 2015, just six of 19 schools were accredited.

“We are proud of the progress we are seeing across the board in regards to student achievement,” said PPS Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy III. “Undoubtedly, we are proud of our students, teachers, families and school leaders who are working tirelessly to ensure we are meeting – and exceeding – our state standards.”

Among the successes this year, Churchland Middle became the first middle school in the division to be accredited since the 2010-11 school year. Additionally, Brighton Elementary School earned accreditation for the first time in six years.

For the upcoming 2019-2020 school year, Bracy is confident the schools who missed accreditation this year (some of which were by the narrowest of margins) will see the gains necessary to earn full accreditation for the division this time next year.

“We know the work that is ahead, and we know we are capable of attaining that goal,” Bracy said. “We have laid out our expectations, and our schools are ready. This will be our best year yet.”
