Effective Thursday, Dec. 17, all Portsmouth Public Schools athletic practices and
conditioning will be suspended throughout the Winter Break (Dec. 21-Jan.1). Athletic practices
can resume on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021.
According to Vincent Pugh, the school system’s athletic director, the decision to
implement the delay is the result of the rising number of coronavirus cases in the region. “The
Hampton Roads athletic directors met recently and we agreed to delay the beginning of
basketball until Jan. 11. That said, this is an evolving situation that we must monitor daily so that
decision may be revisited if positivity rates do not subside,” he said.
