Churchland Sophomore Isabel Gonzales was one of just three winners in the state of the 2022 Student
Essay Contest Award, given by the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA). Gonzales's essay was a
response to a VSBA prompt on food security - specifically how food insecurity can impact the success of
students and how access to food can be improved within the community.
Gonzales was presented her award at the VSBA's Conference on Education, which was held in
Richmond, Va., Tuesday, July 19. All of the finalists, including Gonzales, were able to present their essays
at the conference as well as be recognized during the program. Additionally, as an award winner,
Gonzales earned a $1,000 scholarship as well as an invitation to attend the VSBA Workshop for Student
School Board Representatives that will take place in Williamsburg this fall.
Congratulations!
