In 2021, Portsmouth Public Schools began researching new weapons detection systems that could
replace the division’s current metal detectors and provide more comprehensive service in keeping
weapons out of schools and office buildings.
These new weapons detection systems can help identify weapons on individuals in large groups (similar
to what is used in today’s theme parks and sports stadiums). The division first piloted this type of system
at Manor High School in December of 2021.
Beginning Monday, March 27, weapon detection systems made by Evolv Technology will be in place in
all of the division’s middle and high schools. Staff will begin training on them throughout the week of
March 27-31, with a full implementation beginning Monday, April 3. This means by Monday, April 3, all
students and school visitors will enter schools and office buildings through the Evolv system.
For any questions or concerns you may have about these systems, you can click on the EVOLV Parent Guide below,
which includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

This is just one added component of the division’s safety and security offerings. For reminders on the
division’s ongoing work, visit the School Safety page on ppsk12.us.
