In September 2021, Portsmouth Public Schools partnered with two outside organizations to provide virtual learning opportunities for students: Virtual Virginia and Edgenuity. Learn more about the platforms below.

Virtual Virginia
Virtual Virginia is the state’s virtual learning platform, and, as such, it operates on a different school calendar than PPS. You can access the Virtual Virginia calendar here.

PPS will monitor students’ progress in Virtual Virginia. Students must maintain at least a C average while enrolled in Virtual Virginia. In addition, if students go inactive on the platform for eight days or more, they will be automatically dropped from Virtual Virginia.

Any student who wishes to return to in-person learning must do so at the end of a grading period (Nov. 9; Jan. 28; or April 5). Only one change will be allowed.

Please note: The PPS Bright Start Preschool Program will only offer in-person learning. There will be no virtual option for preschool students. For more specific questions, see the following information about Virtual Virginia below:

Elementary School (K-5):

  • Students will remain affiliated with the zoned school
  • Students in the K-5 Elementary program are enrolled full-time and must enroll in the full Math, Reading,

Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and STEM program

Middle and High Schools:

  • High School Courses – Grades 9 to 12 (English, Math, History/Social Sciences, Science, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Health & PE, World Languages)
  • Middle School Courses – Grades 6 to 8 (English, Math, History/Social Sciences, Science, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Health & PE, World Languages)
  • Recommendations on instructional placement are the responsibility of the student’s school counselor. Counselors will review prerequisites and make sure students understand the expectations for online courses selected.
  • PPS will provide required textbooks and supplemental materials for Virtual VA courses at no charge to students/parents.
  • Enrollment Fees – There is no cost to the student/family
  • Full-Time Program – Students enrolled in Virtual VA program remain affiliated with the zoned school. Students may enroll Full-time or as a supplemental enrollment for individual courses. Virtual Virginia offers a full-time program to approximately 200 students each year.
  • Synchronous Instruction – Sample Schedule
  • FAQs
  • Parent Auditor Account – This account will be created upon enrollment and enables parents/guardians to access teacher contact information, monitor student login activity, and view course grades, all within the VVA Student Information System (SIS).
In the fall, families who missed the registration window for Virtual Virginia had the opportunity to enroll in Edgenuity, an asynchronous learning platform. Students are given pre-recorded videos and assignments to complete on their own. There is not a designated teacher online with students each day, but students and families have a live chat option available daily and opportunities to schedule teacher conferences or one-on-one tutoring assistance during the day. These teachers are not PPS staff but Edgenuity employees.
