COVID-19 Updates

The School Board of the City of Portsmouth held its annual retreat Saturday, Aug. 7, and discussed the Educational Plan for the 2021-22 School Year. As shared back in May, all Portsmouth Public Schools will be open for in-person learning, five days a week.

As staff begins the work to reopen schools for the fall, administration has been in constant contact and partnership with the Portsmouth Health Department. In addition, administration has also been following closely all updates and guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Education.

As such, the procedures below will be implemented for the start of the 2021-22 school year. These plans can be updated at any time based on updated guidance from the health department. Please see the following:

  • Masks will be required in school and on school buses in accordance with the legislation from Gov. Ralph Northam, which mandated divisions to follow the guidance of the CDC. Please note face masks are required (not face shields) as is the guidance of the CDC.

  • Deep disinfecting teams will rotate through all schools and offices daily.

  • Touchless water fountains will be available for all students and staff.

  • Freestanding sanitation stations will remain throughout buildings.

  • School buses will have their disinfecting kits on school buses, used in between each bus run,

  • Air filtration system inspections will continue to occur on a higher frequency schedule.

  • The COVID-19 Dashboard will continue to be updated daily, and it is available on the division’s homepage.

Again, Portsmouth Public Schools and the Portsmouth Health Department will continue to work closely throughout this pandemic and reopening. If there are any needs to make alterations or changes to the operating schedule, those will be implemented immediately.
