Churchland High School earned prestigious Harry F. Byrd, Jr. Leadership Award

Myles Hunt, a senior at Churchland High School, has been named a 2021 recipient of the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. Leadership Award. Hunt was the selected recipient from the 3 rd Congressional District, which includes the cities of Franklin, Newport News and Portsmouth, parts of the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk and Suffolk as well as all of Isle of Wight county. Hunt is one of just 11 recipients throughout the state.

The award, named for former United States Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., who spent 36 years in elected public office (18 years in the Virginia State Senate and 18 years in the United States Senate), was established to recognize “Virginia’s high school students exhibiting excellence of character, leadership, devotion to duty and academic accomplishment.”

In addition to managing his studies at Churchland, Hunt serves as the student representative on the School Board of the City of Portsmouth and also was selected to serve on a committee created by Virginia State Superintendent Dr. James Lane to analyze and address areas of inequity in the state’s K-12 educational system.

Hunt will receive the award in April 2021 along with its $15,000 prize.
