Elijah Macklin, a senior at Churchland High School, was selected to take part in the News Literacy Project.

WTKR News Channel 3 is a Scripps Media station, and is partnering with the News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan national education nonprofit, to help the next generation of news consumers discern credible information from misinformation in today’s media. As part of that partnership, they are working together to present National News Literacy Week from Monday, Jan. 27 to Friday Feb. 2.

Macklin was selected to co-produce a story (with the guidance of WTKR staff) that will air on WTKR.

For his story, Macklin wanted to learn more about the balance of teaching politics in the classroom while also keeping boundaries on personal opinions.

“Current events are a touchy subject because teachers are there to teach, not to interpret an event,” Macklin said.

For his story, Macklin interviewed two fellow students at Churchland as well as the Portsmouth Public Schools Coordinator of Social Studies William Hicks. You can see his story live Monday, Jan. 27 during the 5 p.m. news as well as on the 7 p.m. news on sister station WGNT. The story will also be available on wtkr.com.
