Parent, Patillo re-elected as Board chair, vice-chair
At the Jan. 9 reorganizational meeting of the School Board of the City of Portsmouth, School Board Chairman Claude Parent was re-elected to his position for the fifth straight year. Rev. Cardell Patillo also was re-elected to serve as
vice-chairman for 2020. 

Parent has been a lifelong educator. He worked in Portsmouth Public Schools for 39 years, serving in a number of roles, including teacher, assistant principal, principal and director. During his career, he received distinguished service awards from school groups and community-based organizations as well as division honors such as the 1990 Teacher of the Year, 1991 Administrator of the Year and 1997 Principal of the Year. Parent has served as the Chairman of the School Board since 2016. 

Patillo has served on the Portsmouth School Board since his election in November of 2014. Patillo serves as the youth pastor at Grove Baptist Church, and he earned both his undergraduate degree in multi-disciplinary studies as well as master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Liberty University. Patillo also completed a Master of Divinity Degree at The Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. This is the second consecutive year Patillo has served as vice-chairman.  

Also at the Jan. 9 meeting, the School Board voted to extend the contract of Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy, III through to 2023. Bracy has served as the superintendent since 2015.
