Visual Arts

Welcome to Portsmouth Public Schools Visual Arts Homepage!

Description of Visual Arts Coursework:

Elementary
Students receive weekly visual arts instruction to advance critical thinking skills, exercise fine motor skills and to encourage personal expression.

Middle School

The middle school visual arts curriculum provides students with a cultural and historical context for investigating the visual language. Students are exposed to a variety of media and processes that include traditional media such as drawing, painting and sculpture as well as technology.

High School

The high school visual arts curriculum centers on the continued development of artistic skills, aesthetic awareness, and historical and cultural knowledge. Individual creative expression is encouraged and students hone skills through planning and ideation in sketchbooks and technical skill building exercises.

A cumulative portfolio of art from each course demonstrates the students’ individual growth and reflects a broad range of media, styles, and processes.
