Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) is one of just six school divisions in the state to be named a Purple Star Division this year by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.
“We’re incredibly honored to receive this recognition,” said PPS Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy, III. “It highlights the dedication of our staff and community to supporting our military-connected students and families, whose strength and sacrifice inspire us every day. We take great pride in ensuring all of our schools are creating a welcoming, understanding environment where military families and students can thrive.”
To reach and maintain Purple Star division status, all schools in the school division must have an active Purple Star School Designation. This year, the final cohort of PPS schools earned their Purple Stars, which are earned by demonstrating their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families.
Schools do this in a number of ways, including providing resources on issues important to military families, hosting professional development specific to the needs of military-connected students, having peer-to-peer transitions programs for new students, and for celebrating military connected events and holidays at the school.

Their work ensures that every child feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Emily Anne Gullickson. “Their dedication reflects the very best of Virginia’s public education system and our shared belief that every student deserves a strong start and a bright future.”
