How our program works:

  • Adult students, 18 and older, call to register and schedule a TABE (Test for Adult Basic Education) or CASAS (Test for English Language Learners) pre-test for enrollment.
  • After all, results are received, and students have attended orientation, students are next enrolled in a day, evening, or virtual class.

Morning Class Times-ABE/HSE/ELL

  • Monumental United Methodist Church 9:30-11:30 am Monday/Tuesday
  • VCW Norfolk 9:30-11:30 am Tuesday-Thursday
  • S. H. Clarke Academy 9:30-11:30 am Tuesday-Thursday
  • New Bethel Baptist Church 9:30-11:30 am Wednesday/Thursday
  • VCW Portsmouth 9:30-11:30 am Tuesday/Thursday

Digital Literacy Only Class Times

  • 12:00-2:00 pm Monday
  • 9:30-11:30 am Tuesday-Thursday

Evening Class Times-ABE/HSE/ELL

  • S. H. Clarke Academy 5:30-7:30 pm Tuesday-Thursday

After 40 hours of instruction, ABE/HSE students will take the TABE post-test to assess their individual growth and meet with our staff to set goals for the GED.

Testing will begin on time. New and returning students must contact the Adult Ed. office at (757) 393-8822 to register for testing and technology assistance.

Adult Basic Education Classes provide in-depth study for students who need to strengthen their basic skills before moving into GED Preparation classes. All ABE classes are offered free of charge virtually and in person. Classes are offered at Stephen H. Clarke - 2801 Turnpike Road Portsmouth, VA.
