Churchland High School senior Jonathan McEwen has earned the 2022 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Student-Athlete Achievement Award for his outstanding academic performance and community involvement. He is one of only sixteen finalists selected to receive this scholarship award statewide.

McEwen’s qualifying athletic achievements include being named the 2019 Portsmouth City Junior Golf Champion, receiving the 2022 Eastern Amateur Joe Tusing Sportsmanship Award and being a member of the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Team that placed first in the 14th Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational.

Maintaining a 4.42 GPA, McEwen also excels off of the golf course as a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Latin Honor Society and National Social Studies Honor Society. Additionally, he has been named a College Board AP Scholar with Distinction.

Outside of his athletic and academic achievements, McEwen enjoys volunteering as a summer camp golf instructor and working with the YMCA as a youth basketball coach for children with autism.

“Each year we are amazed at the quality of individuals nominated for our Student-Athlete Achievement Awards scholarships,” says Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Executive Director, Will Driscoll. “While sports participation is a requirement for this program, the academic and community engagement exhibited by these students is what sets them apart.”
