PPS to receive federal student mental health grant

Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) has been selected by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to participate in the Federal School Based Mental Health Grant, a national initiative to support the expansion of behavioral and mental health services for students.

Out of all 132 school divisions in the state, PPS is one of only eight selected to participate in the five-year, $15 million federal grant program.

Funding from the grant will directly support the division’s commitment to recruit and retain high-quality mental health professionals, such as school counselors, school psychologists and school social workers, as well as provide more professional development opportunities for division leaders and school administrators.

“This grant will allow us to expound upon our commitment to support the whole child,” said Portsmouth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy, III. “Recognizing the direct correlation between a student’s social-emotional wellbeing and their educational experience, our participation in this program will further enhance our ability to provide an equitable and safe learning environment at each of our schools.”
