PPS Science Specialist receives international honor

Portsmouth Public Schools Elementary Science Program Specialist Davina Williams has been selected as part of the 2022 Class of Emerging Leaders by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).

The ASCD describes its Emerging Leaders program as a diverse group of educators who have been in education for five-15 years and have made an impact as leaders in their school divisions and communities.

In order to be selected for the Emerging Leaders program, educators had to be nominated and provide examples of their leadership works for several rounds of reviews by the selection committee. Williams is one of only 21 professionals selected to receive this honor over nominees from across the globe.

“I'm excited to know that those in the ASCD organization acknowledge and honor what I do in education,” says Williams. “This is an international opportunity, and I'm elated to be chosen out of worldwide candidates.”

Williams accredits her preparedness to her professional development since working at Portsmouth Public Schools, as well as interactions with division leadership.

“Laura Nelson, my former PPS Science Coordinator, modeled what it means to be a true servant leader by being personable and building positive relationships,” reflects Williams. “Being a leader is not about giving directives; it's about showing people that you truly care and are willing to step in and do the hard work with them.”

Newly inducted members will be formally recognized at the ASCD Emerging Leaders welcome reception in National Harbor, Maryland in October 2022.
