PPS earns state ‘Creating Excellence’ honor for Career & Technical Education

Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) is one of just 10 Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs in the state honored by the Virginia Department of Education and Virginia’s Community Colleges’ annual “Creating Excellence” awards program.

“The Creating Excellence Awards promote best practices in education and recognize exemplary contributions that improve the quality of secondary and postsecondary CTE programs statewide,” Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges, said in the awards’ press release. “Recognizing these outstanding CTE programs again highlights the value of CTE programs, draws attention to CTE programs at each of Virginia’s Community Colleges, and strengthens partnerships that support, promote, and enhance Virginia’s workforce and economy.”

PPS was specifically recognized for its CTE Advisory Committee, which is made up of local business and community professionals, teachers, students, administrators and parents. The purpose of the PPS advisory committee is to support educators, students and businesses in developing, establishing and evaluating CTE programs to ensure students are well prepared for the world of work.

Through the CTE program, PPS high school students can begin working on their dream careers by getting access to the skills and the learning needed to excel in those specific jobs or career pathways while still working toward graduation. These career pathways include nursing, early childhood education, sports medicine and entrepreneurship.
