A message on school safety and mental health supports

Let me first share that my deepest sympathies go out to the victims and families from yesterday’s devastating school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. As a father and an educator, it has been heartbreaking to watch the news and learn of yet another senseless act of violence that has taken place inside a school.

Understandably, such events can cause great anxiety and fear among our students, staff and families. Please know you are not alone. If your child is experiencing any overwhelming feelings, our school counselors are available to talk and to listen. For staff members, our employee assistance program remains a free resource for you at any time. We also have a host of community partners who help provide resources and insight for all of our families. You can access this information directly on our Here to Help webpage.

We are fortunate to have strong partnerships with the Portsmouth Police Department and the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office. In fact, we have been in contact with both of these agencies today to request an increased presence of officers and deputies in our buildings through the end of the school year. This will provide an additional level of security as well as help comfort those who may be struggling. I also want you to know that we routinely review our safety measures and security practices with our public safety partners to ensure they align with best practices. We will continue this work moving forward.

There are no words that can adequately capture the collective sorrow we feel from yesterday’s events. I can just say I stand in that grief with you. I thank you for your continued support of our school division and for your partnership in creating a better future for our children.
