Students to return to in-person learning April 12

The School Board of the City of Portsmouth voted 6-3 today to approve a school reopening plan that would allow students in prekindergarten through sixth grade to return for in-person instruction on a hybrid schedule (two days in person, three days virtual). All middle and high school students will remain in virtual instruction for the rest of the year.

With this approved plan, special education and English Language Learners (EL) students in all grades would be able to return to in-person instruction on a four-day schedule.

This hybrid schedule will go into place Monday, April 12. In preparation for students’ return, all PPS staff members will return to schools and buildings Monday, March 29.

Families were surveyed regarding their preferred learning model (hybrid or all virtual) in a survey that closed Thursday, March 4. As families were surveyed based on a slightly different reopening plan, they can reach out to their child’s school directly if they would like to change their previous answers.

The division’s School Reopening Page will house reopening plan details, including frequently asked questions and the hybrid schedules as they are finalized.
