Current COVID-19 Athletics Plan

Updated 1/4/2020

The Status of Virginia High School League-Sanctioned Sports and
Extracurricular Activities

How high school sports and extracurricular activities proceed during a pandemic is governed by the Governor’s executive orders and guidance from the Virginia High School League.

At present, this is the situation in Portsmouth:

  • All athletic activities have been suspended until further notice. The division will continue to monitor the number of cases as well as positivity rates from the Virginia Department of Health school metrics, and will reevaluate once the numbers decrease and are stable.

  • The VHSL is now requiring players to wear masks during practice and in competition in most sports. The exceptions are: cheerleading, gymnastics, wrestling, swimming and diving.

  • Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) has decided that no spectators will be allowed to attend high school sporting events. However, PPS is conscious that families do not want to miss such important events in their children’s lives. So, the school division has contracted with NFHS Network to provide livestreaming of sporting events.

  • NFHS Network operates under a yearly or monthly subscription.

  • The schedule of athletic competitions is an evolving situation, largely dependent upon whether or not the instances of COVID-19 cases in the region are increasing or decreasing. Click here to access a listing of each school's athletic schedule.
