Dr. Elie Bracy, III named Region 2 Superintendent of the Year

Portsmouth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy, III has been named the Region 2 Superintendent of the Year.

The Virginia Department of Education’s Region 2 is made up of 16 school divisions, including all of Hampton Roads. All total, there are eight regions in the Commonwealth.

In his five years as Superintendent, Bracy has led Portsmouth Public Schools to a sharp increase in school accreditation from 6 of 19 testing schools to 14 of 19 accredited. In addition, Bracy expanded classroom opportunities for students throughout the city. He increased career and technical education programs that prepare students for industry-level jobs right out of high school. He also helped expand a dual enrollment program called First College, in partnership with Tidewater Community College.

Realizing the critical importance of technology in education, Bracy established a Chromebook computer initiative, which provides each high school student with a laptop computer to use at school and at home. Under his leadership, Portsmouth Public Schools has also provided a parent liaison in every school to help support students and families in and out of school.

With this honor, Bracy will now go on to compete for the Virginia Superintendent of the Year title.

Congratulations, Dr. Bracy!
