Portsmouth Public Schools unveils new ‘Shining Brighter Together’ logo

Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) has debuted a brand new look.

At the Jan. 23 meeting of the School Board of the City of Portsmouth, staff unveiled a new logo and branded tagline for the school division.

“We are thrilled to be able to launch this new era in our division’s history,” said PPS Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy, III. “Not only does this new logo capture the joy and pride we all share in Portsmouth Public Schools, it also showcases the wonderful community we share as we are ‘shining brighter together.’”

The logo is a call to the city’s maritime roots with rays of sunshine, which are depicted as book pages, shown rising over the water.

The new logo was created following three months of work with RocketBike, an advertising and creative agency located in downtown Portsmouth. Staff met with students, parents and staff members in the fall to gather their insight regarding the school division. A smaller focus group was brought back in November to provide feedback on the logo concepts drafted by RocketBike based on the initial input.

The partnership with the agency was especially meaningful since RocketBike President Max Greenhood attended John Tyler Elementary School as a young student.

“I discovered my interest in art at John Tyler many years ago and I’m honored to be part of such an important branding project for Portsmouth today,” Greenhood said. “It’s rare to have the opportunity to create something meaningful for the community and I’m proud of the logo and tagline we created with the Portsmouth Public Schools team.”
