Churchland Middle’s Perry-Campbell wins local doctoral competitionChurchland Middle School Assistant Principal Janeen Perry-Campbell is currently working on her doctorate in education at Old Dominion University (ODU).

Last week, the university hosted its third annual 3-Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition, where students have just three minutes to present their research in such a way that “a general audience would understand and appreciate its importance and achievement.”

Perry-Campbell's dissertation topic is "Black Girls in 3D,” which comes from her experience seeing black girls stereotyped as "defiant, disruptive and disrespectful." As part of her presentation, Perry-Campbell pointed out that “black girls are six times more likely to receive a referral than white girls, receive harsher consequences and are often misidentified as needing special education services.”

Perry-Campbell beat out all her fellow students at ODU and won the competition. This March, she will go on to represent ODU and Portsmouth Public Schools at a regional competition hosted by the Council of Southern Graduate Schools in Birmingham, Ala.
