Crossing Guard of the Year 2014-15
Evelyn Briggs-Westhaven and Park View Elementary, I C Norcom
Evelyn E. Briggs is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia. She is a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She treats all children as if they are her own. She refers to them as “my little girl”, or one of “my boys”. Her dedication to protect the children as they cross the street, is seen with her holding the hands of little ones that may be a bit nervous during their first weeks of school, or she’ll comfort others by saying, “Come on across baby”. She never complains and rarely takes a day off, all while having to endure brisk elements of nature. She has brought hats, gloves and scarves for children that may have been without during the winter months. She keeps up with children’s grades and rewards them for making honor roll or pulling their grades up. She has a great relationship with many of the parents and some see her as an extension to their family. Parents often show their appreciation for her dedication in the way of cards and gifts during the holidays. She is modest and doesn’t do anything to seek recognition or a pat on the back. That’s just the way she is.
Leonard Jones-Victory Elementary
Mr. Jones is an example of someone who believes their job is a mission, not a paycheck. He truly shows compassion and concern for both students and staff as he goes about his duties. Each day Mr. Jones presents himself with a pleasant smile and a word to each person he meets. My duty station is at the location that Mr. Jones checks out in the morning and afternoon, and there is never a day he isn't upbeat and supportive of those he comes in contact. He encourages and supports each child he directs across the street and gives them that special moment of acceptance. In conclusion, I recommend Mr. Jones for this award because he is a shining example of supporting the integrity of relationships as well as the safety of our students.
