Wilson High School Career and Technology Teacher Karen Roberts has been named the recipient of the 2019 National Educated Adviser Award from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Roberts, who teachers Nutrition and Wellness at Wilson, also serves as the school’s FCCLA sponsor.

According to the FCCLA, winners of this national honor are recognized for their active affiliation with an FCCLA chapter, professional development activities and recommendations from others.

“We are thrilled for Karen as well as her entire FCCLA chapter at Wilson High School,” said Dr. Elie Bracy III, superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools. “This honor is a testament to her devotion not only to her children in the classroom, but also the continued growth and development of her leadership of this outstanding program.”

The FCCLA cited the many professional development activities Roberts participates in related to fundraising, Family and Consumer Sciences integration, career and technical education, best practices, technology, employability skills, diversity awareness and cultural competence.

“Karen uses every opportunity to learn and grow. Not only is Karen an avid learner in our field, she is an avid giver. Karen routinely uses the knowledge and skills that she has gained through study and professional development by sharing that information with others through workshops, service in state and national roles, and in leadership of her professional organizations.” Deborah Will, Virginia FCCLA state adviser, shared in a press release. “She is determined that her students will have opportunities in FCCLA leadership despite the socio-economic environment from which they come. She raises the funds needed to get her students to state and national conferences each year and instills in her students the importance of community service.”

Roberts will receive the award in person as part of the 2019 FCCLA National Leadership Conference, which will take place June 30-July 4 in Anaheim, California.
