Vol. 72, Issue 2:Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Glass Doors-Bridging the Divide

Radical empathy, on the other hand, means putting in the work to educate oneself and to listen with a humble heart to understand another’s experience from their perspective, not as we imagine we would feel. Radical empathy is not about you and what you think you would do in a situation you have never been in and perhaps never will. It is the kindred connection from a place of deep knowing that opens your spirit to the pain of another as they perceive it.

VATE’s Statement on Anti-Racism

In light of recent national examples of racism and discrimination in our country, Virginia Association of Teachers of English (VATE) is publishing this statement to affirm our commitment to working toward the eradication of racism, discrimination, and bigotry in the profession, in the preparation of teachers, and in the administrative decisions made in schools, especially in the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels and stands in support of the National Council of Teachers of English’s (NCTE) full statement on Anti-Racism to Support Teaching and Learning.
