Dr. Janeen Perry-Campbell

On July 1, 2021, Dr. Janeen Perry-Campbell became Portsmouth Public School’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She works with the both internal and external stakeholders in the community to establish and develop sustainable equity goals for the division. She is dedicated to the division in this capacity as she is a product of PPS, graduating from I. C. Norcom High School.

Dr. Perry-Campbell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Old Dominion University, a MBA from Capella University, a Master of Education in Special Education from Virginia State University, and a Ph.D.in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Urban Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University.

As a distinguished educator for over 15 years, she started her career in science education specializing in the areas of Physics, Biology, AP Biology, Chemistry and Engineering. She has not only taught in public high schools, she has also taught on the post-secondary level as a Master Science teacher in the Old Dominion University’s MonarchTeach program and as an adjunct professor in the graduate school of education at James Madison University. In addition to teaching, Dr. Perry-Campbell has served as middle school assistant principal and principal in Portsmouth Public Schools.

Her research on Black Girls in 3D: Disruptive, Defiant, and Disrespectful has served as a springboard for presentations, workshops, and professional development on current issues that delve into race, diversity, equity, and inclusion across the nation. Her research areas are in critical race theory, culturally responsive and sustaining classroom management as well as pedagogy, and disproportionate disciplinary outcomes for Black girls. Dr. Perry-Campbell’s research on Black girls has garnered her numerous accolades, awards, and opportunities. She has a book chapter that is being published about Black female scholars who study Black girls.
