School Board Member
A 30-year plus resident of the city, James E. Bridgeford has been a member of the Portsmouth City School Board since 1990. As both a retired systems accountant and federal auditor, Bridgeford brings a sense of fiscal responsibility and commitment to his position as a School Board member. His chief concern is to improve the quality of public education today, as opposed to delaying important decisions that will impact the students’ education and that will be far more costly in the long run.
He graduated from Norfolk’s Booker T. Washington High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Norfolk State University. In addition, he has attended various government-sponsored schools, including the Department of Defense‘s Military Comptroller School.
Mr. Bridgeford is committed to the challenge of achieving a quality school division that can continue to advance and improve, while reaching even greater heights. He is a strong advocate for improving student achievement by means of the division’s strategic plan. Among his high priorities is the safety of students and personnel. He promotes and encourages the spirit of volunteerism at the school level, which he believes has the potential of affording students increased opportunities to learn.
He possesses the needed qualities that make for an effective school leader. Bridgeford participates in various programs at the school level and encourages all students to become the very best that they can in order to improve their chances of fulfilling their dreams.
Over the years, James Bridgeford has received a number of honors and awards for his active participation in various community-service projects.
